Lubricating power slides on backhoes

This time, we have brought an apparently ‘simple’ problem to this section, but one that has been the source of headaches for many backhoe users who use power slides to manipulate the backhoe.

This particular problem was mentioned by the owner of a Komatsu WB 92 machine in the town of Higuera de las Dueñas in Ávila in conversation with the VICMAQ representative, an OLIPES partner in the Public Works and Agricultural Machinery in the central area, Victor Alonso.

The situation is as follows: the owner of the backhoe loader uses it a lot under any and all conditions, whether it is dusty, damp, muddy, or even snowy, for work in fields as well as trenching, moving earth, etc.

In spite of the user being relatively attentive to maintenance issues and using lithium grease to lubricate the power slides, every few months the client is forced to replace joints and seals in the hydraulic pistons and cylinders due to their being damaged and leaking hydraulic fluid.

The solution to the problem was to apply Maxigras Cadenas as a spray in place of the dense lithium grease. Maxigras Cadenas is a Teflon-type-impregnated grease (with PTFE) that is uniquely formulated to lubricated guide rails, risers, pistons, and chains that are subject to extreme forces and harsh environmental conditions (water, snow, dust, mud, etc.).

How is it possible that a spray-on lubricant for chains can prevent hydraulic joints and seals from failing?

The explanation behind the problem is simple: Although traditional dense greases are excellent lubricants for bearings and bolts, when they are applied to a sliding mechanism, they trap all the particles of dust, dirt, water, and plant debris that are present operating environment around the machine. As these highly abrasive contaminants accumulate, combined with the temperature differences of the cylinders between their work and pause cycles, they create a sort of crust where there is friction that slowly wears away at the power slide, meaning that the joints and seals get worn at the same time.

The solution that VICMAQ found was even simpler - the spray-on Maxigras Cadenas: A spray-on grease that is very oily, like Maxigras Cadenas, forms a protective film that is thin enough that dust and other external contaminants are not trapped but is still highly resistant to abrasion, high temperatures, and water, lubricating and protecting both slides and risers as well as the joints and seals. Furthermore, it is a synthetic grease that is much more suitable for operation in damp conditions, ensuring that it bonds perfectly to the lubricated areas, even in harsh weather conditions. In addition, spray-on Maxigras Cadenas is compatible with all kinds of rubber, joints, elastomers, and paints, meaning that it can be used on any surface.

For more than four months, the backhoe has not shown any sign of losing hydraulic fluid from its joints, nor any signs of wear to the slider...
