Pre-campaign lubrication of Cereal Harvesters

12.06.18

We are on the eve of the beginning of the cereal harvest, which is expected to be excellent this year thanks to the rains that have been falling up to the end of May. As every professional in the field knows, when it comes to harvesting there is no time for breakdowns and unforeseen events and having the harvester ready to harvest is essential.

We are going to give a recap of the essential areas to look at for the proper pre-campaign lubrication of your harvester, based on the fact that harvesters are machines that only operate for a few months of the year, albeit intensively, and sit idle for the rest of the year.

After a long period without activity, an in-depth maintenance check is required, not only to avoid unwanted breakdowns in the middle of the job, but also to save fuel, reduce the risk of fire during operation and extend the useful life of the mechanical components and accessories.

The review begins with the machine's Lubrication Sheet on hand, which gives detailed information on the engine oils, hydraulics, coolants, greases, etc. that you will need.

On its website, www.olipes.com, OLIPES offers a comprehensive Lubrication Guide for the major manufacturers of agricultural machinery. This guide will help you to easily identify the needs of your team and request the recommended products from your usual distributor.
Engine lubrication.

It is essential that the engine be in perfect condition and ready for the new season. To this end, we recommend:

1- Change the lubricant at the beginning of the season with new, good-quality oil, this will make it easier for you to start up the engine after a period of inactivity.

2- Check the coolant level and consider replacing it. Long hours will be required in the summer sun and overheating leading to breakdowns must be avoided at all costs.

Hydraulic System.

Reduced levels may indicate a leak.

Replace the hydraulic system fluid according to the recommendations of the manufacturer. If it is relatively well used, replace it for maximum assurance before starting the campaign.

Chains, bearings, etc.

You must be aware of the locations of the lubricating points on your machine in order to grease joints and bearings that require it. Do not forget to grease chains and sprockets after thoroughly cleaning them. It is important to choose the right grease for each mechanism, bearing in mind that factors such as temperature, pressure, load, humidity, etc. determine the selection of one type of grease over another.
