CATERPILLAR HAS REVISED ITS BULLETIN

Caterpillar has revised its Bulletin, SEBU6250 

Caterpillar has revised its Machine Fluids Recommendations Bulletin, SEBU6250 (now Rev 23, en-us), last revised in mid 2016, which covers Caterpillar's most current recommendations and specifications for lubricants, fuels and cooling system fluids for use in Caterpillar machines. The lubricant section alone is 79 pages in length. The remainder of the bulletin, now 154 pages, covers fuel specifications, cooling system specification, exhaust aftertreatment specification, contamination control and warranty information, followed by a reference material section.

The primary change in this revision is to address the use of API CK-4 oils. Cat DEO-ULS has been upgraded from API CJ-4 to CK-4. Cat DEO-ULS and Cat DEO are recommended for all pre-Tier 4 engines that use Ultra Low Sulfur Fuel or Low Sulfur Diesel fuels. Cat DEO is recommended for engines using fuels of sulfur levels that exceed 0.2 percent (2000 ppm). Caterpillar states that the new API FA-4 Heavy Duty Engine Oil is not allowed in Cat engines. These recommendations are for Caterpillar machines, such as those used in earthmoving and other off-highway applications, as well as forestry, mining, agriculture, and other applications. The Cat machines included in this bulletin include dozers, loaders, excavators, shovels, motor graders, scrapers, off-highway trucks, pipe layers, telehandlers, compactors, pavers, underground mining equipment, etc.

The fluids include those for use in Cat engines, hydraulic systems, transmissions/drive train, final drives, axles, differentials, hydrostatic transmissions, automatic transmissions, gears, and components requiring grease lubrication.

Caterpillar branded fluids are described in detail and are recommended for use "to increase the performance and life of Caterpillar components" as stated by Caterpillar in the brochure, although other commercially available oils meeting Caterpillar's requirements are allowed. As eluded to above, when Caterpillar branded lubricants are not available, commercially available lubricants such as engine oils meeting API CK-4 and Caterpillar's Engine Crankcase Fluid (ECF) specifications are allowed, the three current ones being ECF-1-a, ECF-2 (AVEROIL GLOBAL) and ECF-3 (AVEROIL FAP).

The ECF-3 (AVEROIL FAP) provides the highest level of performance of the three, is preferred, and is required for use in non-road Tier 4 certified engines that are equipped with aftertreatment devices.

For other compartments, when Cat branded lubricants are not available, suitable commercially available lubricants are also allowed for lubrication of the other components and systems.

El boletín también incluye información sobre TBN, niveles de azufre del combustible, gráficos de aplicación del lubricante (tipo de lubricante Cat para la categoría de la máquina), uso de aceites sintéticos, uso de aceites re-refinados, uso de aditivos de aceite de mercado, uso de biodiesel en motores Caterpillar, intervalos de muestra de aceite, evaluación de los intercambios de cambio óptimos, e información sobre los fluidos de postratamiento de gases de escape, refrigerantes y combustibles.
