Brake fluids are classified according to a ‘DOT’ number that is the acronym for the ‘Department of Transportation’ in the United States of America.

The Department Of Transportation is a body that joins a variety of North-American offices and governmental agencies with the aim of ‘safeguarding the serity of any public means of transport, increasing mobility, and contributing to the economic growth of the nation by means of transportation’.

The DOT specifications are a measure of the quality of the braking fluid, which are classified according to their boiling point. DOT 4 has a higher boiling point than DOT 3, meaning that it responds better to braking, improving the safety of the driving.

A higher DOT means a higher boiling point, in accordance with the regulation:
