The DOT specifications are a measure of the quality of the braking fluid, which are classified according to their boiling point. DOT 4 has a higher boiling point than DOT 3, meaning that it responds better to braking, improving the safety of the driving.
A higher DOT means a higher boiling point, in accordance with the regulation:
SPECIFICATION | BOILING POINT MINIMUM ºC |
DOT 3 | 205 |
DOT 4 | 230 |
DOT 5.1 | 260 |
DOT 5 (*) | 260 |
The temperatures shown in this table are understood as the minimum required.
(*): DOT 3, DOT 4, and DOT 5.1 ¬brake fluids are made with a polyethylene glycol base and can be mixed among themselves¬, but not with DOT5, which is made with a silicone base.
