In the complex world of lubricating grease, we find two standardised ways to classify them. The two most common ones are the DIN system (Deutsches Institut für Normung) and the ISO (International Organization for Standardization).
Both systems, through the use of an agreed terminology, offer us extensive information content regarding the most relevant aspects of grease: consistency, composition, working temperatures, recommended application, extreme pressure properties, etc.

Determining and classifying lubricating greases in accordance with DIN 51 502

The First Letter tells us the main application for which greases are recommended: K, G, OG, M, or Additional letters for synthetic greases.

The symbol indicates the type of base oil used:
TRIANGLE: Mineral Oil
DIAMOND: Synthetic Oil


The Second identifying letter indicates the type or types of additives used: D, E, F, L, M, S, P, V. 

The Number indicates the NLGI grade (hardness) of the grease, according to the ASTM D-217 standard: From softest to hardest: 000, 00, 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6.

 
 
 
 
 
 
The degree of hardness 2 is the most standardised for multifunctional greases.

Grease consistencies and penetration at 25ºC in accordance with the ASTM D-217 standard.

The Additional Identifying Letter additional identifying letter indicates the maximum application or work temperature: C, D, E, F, G, H, K, M, N, P, R, S, T, U.

* The maximum temperature of application or continuous lubrication corresponds to the maximum test temperature in tests carried out in accordance with DIN 51821 part 2 and/or DIN 51821 part 2, if they have approved the tests.

2 means a moderate change
3 means a considerable change


The Last Number, after the "-" indicates the minimum application or work temperature:

Greases formulated with synthetic base oils and identified by a diamond, can carry an additional letter that indicates the type of oil used, it is especially important to know the type of oil when it is incompatible with paints, elastomers or other types of mineral or synthetic oil.

ISO (International Organization for Standardization)

The ISO6743-9 standard is the classification of the X family (greases), which is encompassed within the ISO 6743 standard (Lubricants, industrial oils and class L related products).

Classification in this standard is based on the conditions of use of the grease, and not on its formulation.
