The IMO will impose a reduction in the use of sulphur in vessel fuel oil.

The new regulation will come into force in 2020.

The International Maritime Organization has expressed its intention to contribute to international efforts to reduce air pollution and address climate change. To do this, it has drawn up new global regulation framework, which will come into force on 1 January 2020. This will impose a reduction in the limit on the sulphur content of fuel oil used on board vessels from 3.5% to 0.50% (outside the assigned emission control areas, where the limit is already 0.10%).

This can be achieved by using low-sulphur or gaseous fuel. Alternatively, an approved 'equivalent method' can also be used, such as the use of heavy fuel combined with an exhaust gas cleaning system.

Which controls will be applied to ensure compliance with the new limit?

Who is responsible for monitoring and verification?

What role do lubricants play in this new scenario?

These and other questions are covered in the interesting report published by Insight, the media communications arm of Infineum International Limited - an innovator in and manufacturer of fuel and lubricant additives, which we offer you here.
